Today's ride was really long and the weather forecast said that the heat index/temperature was supposed to get around 110 degrees F - hence the early departure. Our group was able to knock out 45/50 miles by 10:30 am, but then we stopped for a second breakfast, stopped again for a milkshake, and stopped a third time to go swimming in a SWEET river!! The water was super cold and just what the doctor ordered as the day was heading into the 1 pm hour. The only problem with all of these stops is the fact that the temperature kept rising. After departing the river around 3:30 pm, we had 13 more miles to complete in some super hot weather.
On a side note, the flora and fauna has really changed after we hit the Ozark Mountains. Being married to a forester, I definitely noticed that the forests changed from typical decidous forests on the East Coast to stands heavy with coniferous trees (we also rode through the Mark Twain National Forest today). This was noticable by scent when biking through and smelling the pine trees. Furthermore, the type of roadkill we ride past has changed. East of the Appalachians it was typically rabbits, deer, skunks, racoons, etc. The past two days we have seen some of the normal dead animals, but we also have seen a few dead armadillos as the scenery has changed to a drier climate (semi-desert-ish).
On that note, I am off to try and catch a few more ZZZZ's before our ride tomorrow!
