Special Edition 3 - Restrooms!

Part of this post is courtesy of Dale Johnson's blog.

Folks have been asking Dale about restroom breaks and how that works while riding across the country. First of all, our nightly accommodations have all had restrooms, although it is sometimes just one to share amongst the entire group. There is often a rush for the restrooms in the morning. According to Dale, "most folks are very insistent on their morning constitution(s) before the ride."

Our support vehicle selects a place to have a break approximately every 20 miles. It is estimated that 80% of these stops, which are often convenience stores, have rest rooms available. These are definitely not your run of the mill nice, clean, cozy bathrooms available at home where one reads a magazine in leisure. The standards on restrooms has dropped and you gotta use what you gotta use!

What do you do if you are riding along and nature calls? For the men, it is simply finding a secluded area to stop. In the East, trees are easy to find. This may become more of a problem as we move West and trees become fewer and fewer. Most of the women have done the same, but as an absolute last resort.

An interesting side note: during the Tour De France bike race, riders are often on the saddle for 5-6 hours. Riders can actually use the “restroom” on the bike. They will wait for a downhill and move toward a place in the group where no one is behind them. You can use your imagination to finish the explanation. Good thing we haven't had to drop that far.

I knew y'all were interested in that! Special Edition, over and out, until next time...
